Mandela was born in Qunu, South Africa, in 1918. He studied law in Johannesburg, but his first job was herding family's cattle. In 1942, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) starting a brilliant career as a politician.
But in 1963 he was put in a jail because his anti-government activities - Mandela fought against the unjust system of apartheid. He stayed in prison until 1990 and in 1994 he became the first democratically-elected president of South Africa with 62% of vote. He was president until 1999 and after retirement he started to raise money for children's charities.
